the giants - a heavy legacy
In the cities of Central and Eastern Europe, countless residential complexes made of reinforced concrete panel buildings from the socialist era can still be found
Following the war, the acute housing crisis demanded an immediate solution. Simultaneously, the new regime sought a final break with a past they deemed obsolete and regressive.
Ultimately, they found the solution that perfectly embodied the mandatory conformism of the ideology: the large-panel residential building. Manufactured in factories and assembled on-site, these structures became the physical manifestation of a standardized world.
They systematically embedded these massive reinforced concrete structures into major cities and small towns alike, leaving no corner untouched. they raised entire districts where an oppressive uniformity was mandatory in every dimension, forcing society into a pre-designed, collective mould.
Their heavy legacy will remain with us for the foreseeable future.
The Giants awake!
